The frontline equity indices on the BSE and National Stock Exchange (NSE) opened around 2 per cent lower on Monday.
The global peers fell after the head of the US Federal Reserve indicated high-interest rates will continue for some time to curb inflation.
At 9:19 am, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 1,311.16 points (2.23 per cent) at 57,522.71, while the Nifty 50 was trading at 17,170.40, down 388.50 points (2.21 per cent).
