At the 47th UEFA Congress, which was convened here on Wednesday, Aleksander Ceferin was re-elected without opposition as president of UEFA for another four-year term from 2023 to 2027. Since 2016, when he succeeded former French international Michel Platini, who resigned following a controversy involving a conflict of interest and abuse of authority, the 55-year-old Slovenian has presided over UEFA as its seventh president. The first time Ceferin, a qualified attorney, ran for office was in 2019.
In his acceptance speech, Ceferin, who was the only candidate, thanked delegates for their support. “It is a great honour but mainly it is a great responsibility towards football,” said the President. “I will do my best not to disappoint.”
“We must never lose sight of how beautiful football is, how it arouses our emotions, how it grips hundreds of millions of people, and how it defines who we are. The success of European football is exceptional. It represents our culture in miniature. This is soccer in Europe. In his opening remarks at the UEFA Congress, Ceferin described the event as “beautiful. Breathtaking.”
