The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form the new government in Delhi after securing a majority in the recently concluded Delhi Legislative Assembly elections. With 48 out of 70 seats won, the BJP has successfully ended the decade-long rule of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), marking its return to power in the national capital after 27 years.
According to party sources, the new Chief Minister of Delhi, along with the council of ministers, is expected to take the oath of office on February 20, 2025, at 4:30 PM at Ramlila Maidan. The ceremony is anticipated to be a grand event, attended by top BJP leaders, including Chief Ministers from various BJP-ruled states.
Despite the BJP’s victory, the party has yet to finalize its Chief Ministerial candidate. A BJP legislative party meeting, originally scheduled for Monday, February 17, has been postponed and is now expected to take place on Wednesday, February 19. During this meeting, the party will deliberate on and finalize its leader, who will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi.
The election results marked a significant shift in Delhi’s political landscape. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had been in power since 2013, managed to secure only 22 seats. Several prominent AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, faced defeat in this election. This outcome follows a brief tenure of Atishi Marlena, who served as Delhi’s Chief Minister from September 21, 2024, to February 9, 2025, following Kejriwal’s resignation in September 2024.
As Delhi prepares for a new government, political analysts speculate on the BJP’s policy direction and governance strategies. The party’s leadership selection will play a crucial role in determining the administration’s priorities and initiatives in the coming years.
With just a few days left for the swearing-in ceremony, all eyes are on the BJP’s upcoming legislative meeting, which will shape the future of Delhi’s political landscape.
