Cloud bursts in Sikkim leads to deadly floods

Sikkim saw terrible flash floods on the morning of October 4 that claimed the lives of 14 people while leaving 102 people, including 22 troops, missing. The state government estimates that nearly 2,000 people were evacuated, along with 26 injuries. According to the state officials, eleven bridges have been washed away, affecting a population of more than 22,000 people.Several organisations, including the Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are conducting search operations in the impacted areas. The scale of the damage in the northeastern state is clear from images posted by citizens on social media, and the Indian Air Force is ready to take flight.

The most casualties were reported in the East Sikkim village of Pakyong, which is located in the foothills of the Himalayas; seven fatalities were reported there. 59 people are missing in the district, including 23 Army troops.There are worries that more than 3,000 visitors, who are visiting the state, which is a popular vacation spot, may become stranded in various parts of the state.According to the India Meteorological Department, Sikkim had an unusual 41 mm of rain between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning. This amount was about five times the annual average for precipitation at this time.

According to clarification from Sikkim Chief Secretary VB Pathak, a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in northwest Sikkim resulted in a sharp rise in water levels.
