NV Ramana stated that during his tenure as Chief Justice, he focused on filling judicial vacancies, and that up to 250 high court judges were appointed. The CJI stated that filling judge vacancies and improving infrastructure were the two most important issues on his agenda during his one-and-a-half-year tenure. On Saturday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana stated that if people lose faith and trust in the judiciary, the very survival of democracy will be jeopardised. Justice Ramana, who is set to retire next week, stated that it is critical to maintain public faith and trust in the judiciary.”If the people lose the faith and trust in judiciary and if the judiciary collapses, the very survival of democracy will be at stake,” the CJI said.Justice Ramana was speaking following the inauguration of the Vijayawada Court Complex by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court Prashant Kumar Mishra, and judges from the high court and other courts.He stated that as Chief Justice, he focused on filling judicial vacancies, and that up to 250 high court judges were appointed during his tenure. During his one-and-a-half-year tenure, the CJI stated that filling judge vacancies and improving infrastructure were the two most important issues on his agenda. During his tenure as CJI, he said, 250 high court judges were appointed. There were also 12 Supreme Court justices and 15 chief justices of state high courts appointed. According to the Chief Justice, he ensures that all segments of society, particularly women and the underprivileged, are adequately represented in the judiciary.
What did he advise ?
He urged lawyers to lend their full support to various initiatives aimed at strengthening the judiciary and recalled his days as a member of the Vijayawada Bar Association in 1983. He stated that he was advised to travel to Hyderabad by Justice K.G. Shankar. He also recalled his friendship with eminent criminal lawyer Ayyappu Reddy, who was also known for his love of literature and active political participation.
Justice Ramana’s views
While the state’s bifurcation was one reason for the construction delay, Justice Ramana stated that governments were unable to release funds on time due to financial issues, and contractors were unable to complete the work properly. He mentioned that the cost of the eight-story structure had risen from Rs 58 crore to Rs 100 crore. He stated that the structure alone was insufficient and advised judges and lawyers to make the most of the structure. Several high court judges were appointed in both Telugu states during his tenure as CJI, he said. He stated that there are some vacancies and requested that the chief minister and chief justice work to fill them.
