Navratri 2024 Day 5: Honoring Maa Skandamata, The Nurturing Goddess

FEATURE: The sacred festival of Navratri, celebrated with immense devotion across India, holds great religious significance for devotees of Maa Durga. This vibrant festival spans nine days and nine nights, each day dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durga. Today, October 7, 2024, marks the fifth day of Navratri, a day that celebrates the nurturing and compassionate form of Maa Durga—Maa Skandamata.

The Divine Mother: Who is Maa Skandamata?

Maa Skandamata is revered as the mother of Lord Skanda (also known as Kartikeya), the warrior son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. She is depicted as a divine mother seated on a lion, with four hands, holding a lotus flower in each of her two upper hands. In her lap rests the infant Kartikeya, who is portrayed with six faces. Her radiant and compassionate form embodies the essence of motherly love, protection, and care.

Worshipping Skandamata with pure devotion is believed to bring blessings of happiness, peace, and all worldly pleasures. She grants the wishes of her devotees and helps them overcome any obstacles in their lives. Her divine aura is said to rid people of their sufferings and guide them towards a fulfilling life.

The Story Behind Skandamata

According to Hindu scriptures, the legend of Skandamata is closely tied to the birth of Lord Kartikeya. There was once a demon named Tarkasura, who performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma. In return, Tarkasura sought a boon to become immortal. However, Lord Brahma denied his request, as no being can escape death. Tarkasura then cleverly asked for a boon that would allow him to be killed only by the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, thinking that Lord Shiva, who was detached from worldly affairs, would never marry and have a child.

However, Goddess Parvati, an incarnation of Goddess Sati, was destined to marry Lord Shiva. Their union resulted in the birth of Lord Kartikeya, who grew into a mighty warrior. Lord Brahma appointed Kartikeya as the commander-in-chief of the divine army due to his exceptional strength and leadership. He later defeated the demon Tarkasura, freeing the universe from his tyranny. Since then, Parvati has been revered as Skandamata, the mother of the powerful Lord Kartikeya.

Significance of Worship on Day 5 of Navratri

The fifth day of Navratri holds special significance for those seeking divine blessings. Maa Skandamata is associated with the Vishuddha Chakra, also known as the throat chakra, which is believed to purify one’s thoughts and actions. Meditating on this day can help devotees achieve a state of spiritual clarity and peace, bringing them closer to the divine.

For those who practice meditation or wish to begin, this day is considered particularly auspicious. By worshipping Maa Skandamata, devotees can elevate their spiritual awareness and connect with undiluted, pure thoughts. Her blessings can guide them through their struggles and help them find solace in her nurturing presence.
