Singh began his career in 1987 as an Engineer Trainee with NTPC and has since worked across various roles in public and private sectors, including multinational corporations. Prior to his appointment as NTPC’s CMD in 2016, he was the Managing Director of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited. His vast experience in business development, project execution, and operations has made him one of the most well-versed leaders in the energy sector.
An alumnus of NIT Kurukshetra, Singh has honed his leadership skills through executive programs at prestigious institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad, Saïd Business School-Oxford (UK), Harvard Kennedy School (USA), Darden School of Management – Virginia (USA), Singapore Civil Services College, and ISB Hyderabad.
Under Singh’s leadership, NTPC has witnessed a strategic shift toward renewable energy. Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable power, he spearheaded initiatives that aggressively expand renewable energy capacity, green hydrogen, biomass utilization, and waste-to-energy solutions., green hydrogen, biomass utilization, and waste-to-energy solutions. His vision is to transform NTPC from a “Coal-based Power Generating Company” into a “Sustainable Integrated Energy Company.”
To achieve this, Singh has led NTPC to prioritize reducing its carbon footprint. The company aims to add 30 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, with 5 GW already in progress. It has also taken a firm stance on halting new land acquisitions for greenfield thermal projects, shifting its focus toward cleaner energy alternatives.
Singh’s strategic approach has bolstered NTPC’s competitive standing. The company has won various renewable energy tenders and solidified its presence in the sector. By conceptualizing coal swapping, freight rationalization, and scheduling flexibility, he has ensured that NTPC remains a strong player in both traditional and renewable power generation.

The company has consistently grown, surpassing INR 1 lakh crore in revenue, with an annualized growth rate of 7.2% and double-digit EBITDA growth. NTPC has also maintained a robust debt management strategy, refinancing loans to reduce borrowing costs.
His leadership has made NTPC the largest power generation company in India, with a total capacity of 62,910 MW. In comparison, Adani Power and Tata Power hold capacities of 15,000 MW and 12,742 MW, respectively. Strategic acquisitions, including NEEPCO and THDC, have further strengthened NTPC’s portfolio by adding significant hydro and renewable energy capacity.
As the power sector faces mounting debt, falling tariffs, and intense competition from renewable energy players, Singh remains focused on diversification and innovation. NTPC has established a subsidiary dedicated to renewable energy, ensuring a concentrated effort toward its sustainability goals.
The company has also been proactive in addressing industry challenges. During the COVID-19 crisis, NTPC continued to expand its capacity and recorded the highest-ever single-day generation of 977.07 million units.
