In order to facilitate early identification and prompt reaction, the Odisha Forest Department has increased its wildfire season preparations by deploying drones and AI-enabled cameras.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force (PCCF & HoFF) Dr. K. Murugesan emphasized the department’s excellent results from the previous season during a media conference in Bhubaneswar. He pointed out that a remarkable 99.7% reaction efficiency was achieved by combining satellite-based fire alarms with swift action by ground crews, thereby controlling the majority of events and reducing total damage.
Data from the previous year showed a serious problem, with over 29,709 forest fire sites found throughout Odisha. The main cause of these epidemics was human carelessness, which was made worse by dry grass and accumulated leaf litter in forested regions. Around 4,600 hectares of forest area were impacted during the 2025 season (January to June), according to reports from the Forest Department and other sources. Fire hotspots increased in comparison to previous years.
Learning from that experience, the department has significantly bolstered its preparedness for the current fire season. District-level action plans have been finalised and authorities have created and maintained 20,461 kilometres of fire lines in vulnerable forest zones to act as barriers against fire spread. Additionally, 334 dedicated fire protection squads have been deployed at division, range, and beat levels. These teams are equipped with essential firefighting gear, including nearly 5,000 fire lift blowers and safety kits.
The use of drones and cameras with AI capabilities has significantly improved the early warning and response system. Additionally, the active participation of local communities, Eco-Development Committees, and Vana Suraksha Samitis has been guaranteed. 336 communities have already participated in awareness campaigns, and more than 631 training sessions are scheduled for different field units. Furthermore, some 200 NDRF employees have gotten specialized training in forest fire prevention and management, according to Murugesan, who was reported by IANS.
