For the fourth consecutive day, Pakistan has continued to violate the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC), further heightening tensions between the two nations.
According to an official statement from the Indian Army, during the night of April 27-28, Pakistani Army posts initiated unprovoked small arms fire in areas opposite the Kupwara and Poonch districts. Indian troops responded swiftly and effectively to the aggression, the statement said.
This follows similar incidents reported on the night of April 26-27, when Pakistani troops opened unprovoked fire across the LoC in the Tutmari Gali and Rampur sectors. “Our troops responded effectively with appropriate small arms fire,” the Army had earlier noted.
Tensions have significantly escalated after the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. In response, security forces have intensified counter-terrorism operations across Jammu and Kashmir.
On Sunday, security officials reported the demolition of three more suspected terrorists’ houses in South Kashmir — those belonging to Adnan Shafi Dar in Zainapora (Shopian), Amir Nazir in Daramdora (Pulwama), and Jameel Ahmad in Naz Colony (Bandipora). With these actions, a total of nine suspected terrorists’ houses have been razed since the Pahalgam attack.
In a broader retaliatory move, New Delhi announced several steps against Pakistan, including the cancellation of visas and the suspension of the 1960s Indus Water Treaty. In response, Pakistan has put the 1972 Shimla Agreement in abeyance and closed its airspace to Indian carriers.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah voiced strong support for a decisive fight against terrorism but cautioned against actions that could alienate civilians.
“After the Pahalgam terror attack, there must be a decisive fight against terrorism and its origin. The people of Kashmir have come out openly against terrorism and the murder of innocent people — freely and spontaneously. It’s time to build on this support and avoid any misplaced action that alienates the people. Punish the guilty, show them no mercy, but don’t let innocent people become collateral damage,” Abdullah stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
As both nations brace for further developments, security across the region remains on high alert.
