Protests intensify against 2nd airport in Chennai

The passage of a resolution against land acquisition by 13 communities in and around the Perandur area fueled further opposition to the Tamil Nadu government’s plans for a second airport in Chennai. “This is the third time a resolution has been passed against the acquisition of our land for the second airport coming up at Perandur. Our protests have reached the 99th day and strong opposition will continue against the project,” he said.

For the proposed project, a total of 4,563.56 acres of land would be purchased from 13 villages in Perandur. 3,246.38 acres of this are Patta property or have legal documentation, whereas 1,317.8 acres are government-owned poramboke land. The residents of these 13 communities continue to protest despite the state making an offer that is 3.5 times the land’s market worth.

1,005 families will be impacted by the acquisition procedure, according to the demonstrators. Three ministers and officials from the DMK administration have already met with the demonstrators in an effort to reach a potential compromise.
