Ratan Tata’s will has revealed an unexpected beneficiary: Mohini Mohan Dutta, a longtime associate from the travel sector, who has been bequeathed over ₹500 crore. Dutta, originally from Jamshedpur, had a close association with Tata, although his connection was not widely known.
Sources familiar with the matter stated that Dutta and his family previously owned Stallion, a travel agency that merged with Taj Services in 2013, part of the Taj Group of Hotels. Dutta had controlled 80% of Stallion, with Tata Industries holding the remaining stake. He also served as a director at TC Travel Services, once affiliated with Thomas Cook.
Tata Group insiders confirmed that Dutta frequently described himself as close to the Tata family. Reflecting on their bond at Ratan Tata’s funeral in October 2024, Dutta shared that their relationship spanned six decades, beginning when they first met in Jamshedpur when Tata was 24.
Further surprising the family, Dutta was invited to Tata’s birth anniversary celebrations in December 2024, where only close associates and family members were present. The revelation of Dutta’s inheritance has left the Tata family and close associates stunned.
