“Sunil Gavaskar Responds to Hussain and Atherton’s Criticism: ‘Your Salaries Come from What India Brings to Cricket'”

Former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton sparked a debate by discussing India’s “undeniable advantage” in the 2025 Champions Trophy. While Pakistan’s interim coach Aaqib Javed briefly touched on the subject after their defeat to India, it was Hussain and Atherton’s remarks that ignited widespread controversy. Since then, several international figures, including Australia’s Pat Cummins and South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen, have echoed concerns over the tournament’s scheduling, claiming it gives India a significant advantage.

Reacting sharply to the criticism, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar advised Hussain and Atherton to stop “moaning” and focus on their own team’s performance. Taking a jab at England’s early exit from the tournament after losses to Australia and Afghanistan, Gavaskar urged the former captains to address why England failed to qualify rather than continuously criticizing India. Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar emphasized the importance of focusing on results and national pride, stating, “Instead of constantly complaining about India, they should be looking at their own backyard. Their players seem mentally fragile and more concerned with meeting expectations than achieving results.”
