Despite finding two mobile phones and another bottle of petrol in a bag they found on the railway tracks, the police did not completely rule out a terrorist connection. Around 9.50 p.m. on Sunday, after the train left Kozhikode railway station (north Kerala), an unidentified person poured flammable oil on fellow passengers and set them afire, injuring many and killing three, according to the police. This happened inside the D-1 coach of the Alapuzha-Kannur Express. Police believe that the three victims may have jumped off the moving train in a fit of fright. Three bodies, including the body of an infant, were later found on the railway tracks. Toufiq and Rehana have been named as two of the deceased.
One of the injured individuals said to the police that the unidentified person pulled out a container containing a flammable chemical and sprayed it on fellow passengers before starting a fire and escaping. Between the train stations of Elathur and Koyilandi, the incident took place. Later on in the day, the Kozhikode police commissioner is probably going to address the media. Also, there are rumours that the incident’s specifics have been sought for by central intelligence organisations.
