Since 1993, the United Nations has observed World Water Day on March 22nd, with a focus on the significance of freshwater. The topic for this year is “Leveraging Water for Peace,” which highlights the critical role that water plays in the stability and prosperity of the global community.
Our most valuable “water resource” needs to be protected and conserved more than ever as the effects of climate change worsen and the global population rises. Water may be a sustainable force and a catalyst for sustainable development through coordinated efforts to balance everyone’s needs and human rights.
The Water Resources Department sponsored a conversation this afternoon about the department’s role in the growing demand for water and its efficient use in honor of World Water Day and in light of the Sustainable Development Goals. Senior department personnel attended the meeting, which was presided over by Anu Garg, Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary, Water Resources Department.
During the meeting, several significant actions made by the department to ensure that water is distributed fairly and appropriately among various water consumers were covered. The meeting covered a variety of topics, including the promotion of a culture of water conservation and reuse, crop diversification to yield multiple crops annually from the same land, application of technologies for efficient water use, equitable and prudent water management, women’s leadership and responsibility in it, and peaceful resolution of water distribution disputes.
