At 1730 hours of today, July 26, 2024, IST, a Well Marked Low Pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and the adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal was the location of the Low Pressure Area (LPA) over the North Bay of Bengal and the adjacent coastal portions of Bangladesh. Up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, the accompanying cyclonic circulation tilts southwestward with height. Over the course of the next day, it is anticipated to move across Gangetic West Bengal, neighboring Jharkhand, and north Odisha in a west-northwest direction. The districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, and Angul are expected to see significant rainfall, with heavy to very severe and extremely heavy spells in certain areas, due to the impact of the emerging weather system.
While the IMD has issued a “Orange” warning, meaning that scattered heavy to very heavy falls (7 to 20 cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore, it has also issued a “Yellow” warning, meaning that heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Angul, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Deogarh, and heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Sundargarh, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Nuapada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Jajpur, and Jharsuguda over the course of the next 24 hours.
On Saturday, significant rainfall (between 7 and 11 cm) is predicted to occur at one or two locations across the districts of Kandhamal, Cuttack, Sonepur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Nawarangpur, Koraput, and Nayagarh, according to an IMD “Yellow” warning. Because there is a chance of heavy rain, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) sent collectors in the 13 districts stated above instructions to stay vigilant and check their preparedness on Friday. The SRC has instructed Collectors to assess district-level readiness, take necessary action, and periodically update the district’s status.
