A study that was initially trialled to determine whether a four-day workweek was feasible received resoundingly positive feedback from the participating MNCs. According to reports, nine out of ten businesses said they would be open to keeping the four-day work week policy beyond the six-month “trial” phase.
A local fish store to larger businesses from a variety of industries, including retail, technology, food, and hospitality, participated in the six-month assessment, which was conducted by researchers from Boston College and the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
The test started in the UK in June, and within three months, the businesses had adopted the new policy. If you do the arithmetic, employees are paid 100% for 80% of their typical working hours during a four-day workweek. By the halfway point of the programme, 41 of the 73 companies had answered to a survey. According to the survey’s findings, 86% of respondents said they would keep working a four-day week after the trials are over.
However, some businesses have found this four-day workweek to be more challenging. In a dozen nations, six-month pilot initiatives involving more than 180 enterprises are now in progress. With no salary reduction, employers often switch to four-day, 32-hour schedules (with variations depending on the function and industry).
The Indian government has already proposed new labour laws that will take effect on July 1 and allow businesses to operate on four days of work per week rather than five or six. We may need to wait a few months before these standards are widely adopted, but starting in 2023, it is anticipated that they will be the standard for all businesses.
