Once more called upon to track down and stop another Iranian-flagged FV Al Naeemi that had been captured by pirates and had its crew taken prisoner, INS Sumitra was dispatched. In the Arabian Sea, where the security situation has drastically deteriorated due to the resurgence of piracy and missile and drone attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the Indian Navy said on Tuesday that its offshore patrol vessel INS Sumitra had successfully rescued an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel (FV) that had been taken over by armed pirates off the coast of Somalia. This is the second such action in the last 24 hours.
It is well knowledge that Somali pirates will take over fishing boats and use them as mother ships for attacks on commerce ships. In the southern Arabian Sea, about 850 nautical miles west of Kochi, “INS Sumitra, through swift, persistent, and relentless efforts has rescued two hijacked fishing vessels along with 36 crew members and prevented the misuse of these fishing vessels as mother ships for further acts of piracy on merchant vessels in less than 36 hours (time since the first distress call from FV Iman),” the navy continued.
