Election bonds: The Election Commission was also mandated by the Supreme Court to post the data made public by SBI on its website by March 15 at 5 p.m.The largest bank in the nation was directed to turn in the information by Tuesday, March 12, business hours, after the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the State Bank of India’s (SBI) request for an extension of time to provide the Election Commission with the electoral bond details. Additionally, the poll panel was mandated by the supreme court to post the data on its website by March 15 at 5 p.m.
A five-judge Constitution panel struck down the Center’s electoral bonds programme, which permitted anonymous political finance, in a historic decision rendered on February 15, declaring it to be “unconstitutional”. The SBI was mandated by the Supreme Court to provide information about donors, their contributions, and the recipients by March 13.Last Monday, the SBI asked the court to postpone until June 30 the deadline for disclosing the bond’s specifics.
The bench also stated that all the SBI needs to do is open the sealed cover, gather the data, and provide it to the Election Commission.Senior attorney Harish Salve argued in court on behalf of the SBI, claiming that because the data was stored in two separate silos within its branches, the bank needed extra time to compile and compare the records. He added that the SBI will require a minimum of three weeks to finish the task. The court said that it had merely requested that SBI make a straightforward disclosure.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, claimed that the BJP administration was using the bank as a cover for its “dubious dealings” when SBI asked for an extension of the deadline earlier this month.
