Today, the Odisha government declared that the state is home to 2,098 elephants. With 779 elephants, Angul Circle has the most, followed by Baripada Circle, which has 431. There are 140 elephants in Bhubaneswar and 177 in Berhampur Circle.
Elephants from Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odisha wander from forest to forest in pursuit of food, according to information presented to the State Assembly by Odisha Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh R. Singhkhuntia. West Bengali and Jharkhandi elephants also go into and out of Odisha. As a result, no independent assessment of the harm caused by elephants from these states has been made.
Elephant assaults in the state have resulted in 509 injuries and 668 fatalities during the past three years. During this time, 139 domestic animals also perished as a result of elephant assaults. Additionally, 73,620.82 acres of crops and 10,259 homes have been damaged by the elephants. The minister said that Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs) have been instructed to conduct special planting drives with elephant food plants in 86 elephant movement forests, and that 14 historic elephant corridors have been identified.
