A month after the top court issued a notice to live stream sessions of the ceremonial bench, the Supreme Court of India will begin broadcasting the hearings of the constitutional bench in real time on September 27. Following discussion on the issue by the whole top court on September 20, it was decided to begin live-streaming constitutional bench hearings this week.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit presided over the whole court meeting, and all the judges agreed that constitutional matters should be the first to be streamed live on a regular basis. A bold plan to integrate the use of information and technology in India’s judiciary was the third phase of the e-courts project, which included the proposal to have a unique platform for live-streaming Supreme Court sessions.
Watch three concurrent constitutional bench sessions on webcast.gov.in, which is operated by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and uses YouTube as a streaming platform. The court is debating whether the 10% reservation for the economically weaker sections is legitimate in one of the cases being televised live (EWS). Other cases include the political unrest in Maharashtra and the current struggle between the Central and Delhi governments over jurisdiction.
