At around 12.20 pm on Friday, many smartphone users all over the nation were caught off guard when they saw the message “Emergency Alert: Severe.” Cell Broadcasting System, operated by the Department of Telecommunication, Government of India, transmitted the alert message.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which is implementing the nation’s new emergency alert system, included this in a test. The test message was sent to a representative sample of smartphones in India, and it prompted users’ devices to beep loudly and flash the warning “emergency alert: severe.” This test is being used by the NDMA to evaluate the alert system’s efficacy and spot any potential issues.
In a statement, the Ministry of Communications noted that thorough tests for the Cell Broadcast Alert System are being carried out on each Telecom Service Provider.
Many users on social media voiced concern over system errors or viruses in their phones in reaction to the “Alert” messages that various Indian people received on their phones and sought information about the origin of such a message.
