Iranian Human Rights Activist wins Nobel Peace Prize

As a result of her advocacy against the Iranian government’s mistreatment of women, Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Interestingly, Nobel Prize winner Narges was still incarcerated.”The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2023 #NobelPeacePrize to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee tweeted.

In Iran, one of the worst countries for women’s rights, Narges Mohammadi is a prominent human rights campaigner. According to the website for the Nobel Prize, Narges Mohammadi has been detained 13 times, found guilty five times, and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. It also states that “Her brave struggle has come at tremendous personal cost.” She is currently completing a number of terms in a jail in Tehran for offences like disseminating propaganda against the government.

“Narges Mohammadi is a lady who fights for freedom and human rights. The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to recognise her valiant struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights in Iran by presenting her with this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, according to the website. The award, which Alfred Nobel instituted in his 1895 will and is worth 11 million Swedish crowns (about $1 million), will be given out in Oslo on December 10 in remembrance of his passing. Mohammadi also serves as the deputy director of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre, an NGO run by Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
