Maha Saptami – The auspicious seventh day of Durgapuja

Mahashaptami, also known as the seventh day of Durga Puja, is an auspicious occasion celebrated with great enthusiasm in West Bengal and other parts of India. It holds immense significance in the Hindu calendar as devotees pay homage to Goddess Durga and seek her blessings.

On Mahashaptami, devotees wake up early in the morning and begin the day with prayers and rituals. The day is marked by the recitation of hymns, offering of flowers, and the lighting of incense sticks. Elaborate puja ceremonies take place in beautifully decorated pandals, where the idol of Goddess Durga is worshipped with great devotion.

One of the highlights of Mahashaptami is the ‘Kola Bou’ ritual, where a banana tree is symbolically married to Lord Ganesha. This ritual signifies the arrival of Goddess Durga to her maternal home, Earth. It is believed that the banana tree represents the Goddess herself and is considered a sacred symbol of fertility and prosperity.

Another significant aspect of Mahashaptami is the ‘Nabapatrika’ puja, where nine different plants representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped. These plants, including banana, turmeric, and paddy, are tied together and immersed in water after the puja, symbolizing the departure of the Goddess.

Throughout the day, devotees indulge in cultural performances, including traditional dances like ‘dhunuchi naach’ and ‘sindoor khela.’ The air is filled with the beats of dhak (traditional drum) and the sound of conch shells, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.

Mahashaptami is a time for families and friends to come together, exchange greetings, and enjoy delicious traditional Bengali cuisine. From mouthwatering sweets like sandesh and rosogolla to savory delights like shorshe ilish and macher jhol, the festive feasts are a treat for the taste buds.

As Mahashaptami unfolds, devotees immerse themselves in the divine aura of Goddess Durga, seeking her blessings for strength, prosperity, and well-being. It is a celebration that brings people closer, instills a sense of unity, and reminds us of the triumph of good over evil.

So, let us embrace the spirit of Mahashaptami, revel in the festivities, and cherish the blessings bestowed upon us by Goddess Durga. Shubho Mahashaptami to all!
