Odisha CM Stresses Zero-Tolerance Towards Crime Against Women

Issuing a stern warning to those involved in crimes against women, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said strict action would be taken against perpetrators of such offences.

Addressing the Republic Day celebrations at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, the Chief Minister said women make up nearly half of the state’s population and ensuring their safety, security and dignity remains the government’s top priority. “The safety, security and dignity of women come first for our government, and we are fully committed to safeguarding their rights,” Majhi said.

Emphasising that the state follows a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women, the Chief Minister asserted that violence and atrocities against women would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

He noted that the conviction rate in cases of violence against women was low earlier but has improved significantly after the current government assumed office, reflecting stricter enforcement of the law. Reiterating that prison is the only destination for those who commit crimes against women, Majhi said offenders would face stringent punishment.

Highlighting various welfare initiatives, the Chief Minister said the government has rolled out several schemes to empower women, including the Subhadra scheme. He added that Odisha has taken the lead in implementing the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative, aimed at promoting women’s economic self-reliance. Reaffirming the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, Majhi said ensuring dignity and safety through strict law enforcement and focused welfare programmes remains a key priority.

“I want to assure the mothers and sisters of the state on this occasion that our government is always working for your safety. Anyone committing a crime against women will be punished. In cases of violence against women, all the accused have been arrested,” he said.
