The terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday has triggered a high-level political and security response across the nation. The assault, which claimed the lives of 26 people—mostly tourists from other states—occurred at Baisaran, a well-known tourist destination near Pahalgam town.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his diplomatic visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to Delhi early Wednesday morning. Upon landing, PM Modi convened an urgent meeting at the airport with key officials including the National Security Advisor, the External Affairs Minister, the Foreign Secretary, and other top authorities to assess the situation and discuss India’s immediate response.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah departed for Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening, just hours after the attack took place. Upon arrival, Shah was briefed by Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat. The briefing was attended by top security and administrative officials including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka.
This incident marks one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the Kashmir Valley in recent years, prompting urgent national attention and a coordinated security crackdown in the region.
