Rishi Sunak defends PM Modi in UK’s Parliament

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, indirectly endorsing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, disassociated himself from the contentious BBC documentary series on Thursday, stating he “doesn’t agree with the characterisation” of his Indian counterpart. Imran Hussain, a British MP of Pakistani descent, raised the subject of a divisive BBC documentary series against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the British Parliament, but Sunak ignored him. PM Sunak responded that he disagreed with the portrayal of India’s current prime leader when opposition Labour Party MP Imran Hussain, who is of Pakistani descent, questioned him whether he agreed with the documentary’s assertion that “Modi was personally responsible.”

“The UK government’s position on that is clear and long standing, and it has not changed. Of course, we do not tolerate persecution anywhere, but I am not sure that I agree at all with the characterisation that the hon. gentleman has put forward,” the British PM said.India: The Modi Question, a two-part documentary, premiered on BBC earlier this week. The documentary examines PM Modi’s involvement in the violence in Gujarat in 2002. The documentary’s second instalment, which is slated to air on January 24 and “look at the difficult relationship between Indian PM Narendra Modi’s government and India’s Muslim minority following his re-election in 2019,” will examine this relationship.

We believe this is propaganda, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during a weekly briefing in New Delhi. This is not impartial. That’s prejudiced. Be aware that India has not yet seen a screening of this. In order to prevent this from losing much of its dignity, we don’t wish to respond more.
