Deepak Kesarkar, the minister of school education for Maharashtra, said on Friday that if teaching in schools were of a high enough standard, there shouldn’t be a need to give students homework. Kesarkar told reporters that the proposal was still in its early stages and that he would consult with teachers associations and other interested parties before drafting a final plan for carrying out the order because kids shouldn’t be “overburdened,” he said.
Kesarkar emphasised the need to raise teaching standards to a point where homework is not necessary, saying, “Homework should not be an escape for teachers. In order to eliminate the need for assigning homework to young students, it is critical that teachers teach more effectively in less time. He asserted that teachers should assume responsibility for students’ learning rather than assigning homework and berating students. However, some of the teachers have disagreed with the minister, stating that it is not advisable and possibly harmful for kids to outright ban homework.
Kesarkar had previously stated that the education department was considering including blank pages in textbooks for taking notes so that students wouldn’t have to carry separate notebooks that add weight to their school bags.
