After K K Venugopal’s tenure as India’s attorney general expires on September 30, Venkataramani will take over. Senior Advocate R Venkataramani was named the 16th Attorney General of India by the Centre on Wednesday. He will take over for K. K. Venugopal, whose term ends on September 30. The appointment of Venkataramani is for a three-year term.
At July 1977, Venkataramani registered with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu to become a lawyer. He began practising law in the Supreme Court in 1979. In 1997, he was appointed Senior Advocate.He was appointed to the Law Commission in 2010, and in 2013 he was given another term. In addition to constitutional law, Venkataramani also practised indirect taxation, human rights, civil and criminal law, consumer law, and service law.
He has argued important matters before the Supreme Court and high courts on behalf of the Federal government, various state governments, educational institutions, and public sector organisations.Former Attorney General K K Venugopal took over as the 15th AG in July 2017 for a three-year term after Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi. In 2020, when his three-year term was set to finish, 91-year-old Venugopal wanted to be let off of his position due to his advanced age. But the central government insisted on him staying on and kept extending his contract. He informed the administration following his third extension that he did not want to stay after September 30.
