Yashasvi Jaiswal has achieved what no batter in the history of cricket—past or present—could manage, not even legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Viv Richards, or Rahul Dravid. On Friday, during the opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley in Leeds, the 23-year-old Indian opener smashed his fifth Test century and, in the process, entered uncharted territory.
Jaiswal became the first-ever visiting batter to score centuries on his maiden Test appearances in both England and Australia. Having earlier scored 161 in Perth during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he now followed it up with a composed, masterful ton at Leeds—his first in English conditions and third overall against England.
Notably, even Tendulkar didn’t manage centuries in his first Tests in England or Australia. His maiden England century came in his second Test (Manchester), and his first in Australia came in his third (Adelaide). Jaiswal, however, has shattered that barrier, scoring centuries in his very first Tests in three different countries: the West Indies, Australia, and now England.
Jaiswal brought up his landmark with a single off the final delivery of the 49th over after hitting successive fours against Brydon Carse. His jubilant celebration—jumping and screaming—signaled not just a personal milestone but also a historic one for Indian cricket.
Earlier in the day, after Ben Stokes chose to bowl first, Jaiswal partnered with KL Rahul to give India a strong start. The duo’s 91-run opening stand exploited England’s inconsistent pace attack before Rahul fell for 42. Debutant Sai Sudharsan followed quickly, but Jaiswal stood firm, building a formidable unbroken 123-run stand with captain Shubman Gill by tea. Gill remained unbeaten on 58—his fastest Test fifty—blending aggression with elegance to complement Jaiswal’s steady innings.
With this record, Jaiswal has not only cemented his place in India’s Test setup but also carved his name into cricketing history with a feat no batter before him has achieved.
