The smartphonification of life—which has been on the rise since the middle of the 2000s but was accelerated by the pandemic, as was internet usage in general—is a complex web of interactions between our brains and our smartphones. Long-term stress, loneliness, and exhaustion—common themes since March 2020—are known to have an adverse effect on memory. In a survey conducted by memory researchers in 2021, 80% of respondents claimed that their memories were worse than they were before the pandemic.

Not only is COVID-19 breaking us down, but also the depressing local, national, and international news cycle. Many of us use diversions like social media to soothe ourselves.Additionally, phone notifications and self-interruptions to check for them also seem to have an impact on what, how, and if we remember. Meanwhile, endless scrolling can occasionally cause its own distress.
