Festival Binds Soul together

In Conversation with Sridevi K. J. Sharmirajan

Hey Sridevi! I’d love to know more about your thoughts on how festivals bind souls together. Could you answer a few questions for me?

  1. What is your favorite festival that you believe brings people closer?

Ans

Pongal:

For me, Pongal is an incredibly special festival that brings people closer in a way that is deeply rooted in our culture. The four-day celebration of Pongal is a time when my family and I come together to express our gratitude for the bountiful harvest. We all participate in the cooking of the Pongal dish, and the act of preparing and sharing this meal symbolizes unity and our strong family bonds. The traditional music and dance performances during Pongal further strengthen our connection with our heritage, reminding us of the importance of preserving our traditions and passing them down to the next generation.

Dussehra:

Dussehra holds a significant place in my heart as it symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The reenactment of the epic Ramayana through processions and plays is a cherished tradition in our community. It’s a time when we all come together to watch the dramatic portrayal of Lord Rama’s triumph over the demon king Ravana. The burning of effigies serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding moral and ethical values. Dussehra is a time when we not only celebrate our shared faith but also reinforce our commitment to righteousness as a community.

Diwali:

Diwali is undoubtedly my favorite festival. The festival of lights radiates warmth and unity in our lives. The preparations, the cleaning and decorating of our homes, and the lighting of diyas bring a sense of togetherness and harmony within our family. The exchange of gifts, sweets, and the joy of bursting fireworks together strengthen our connections with friends and neighbors. Diwali is a time when we bond, celebrate our culture, and express our love and affection for one another. It’s a festival that truly brings our community together.

In my view, these festivals, Pongal, Dussehra, and Diwali, are not just events on the calendar; they are powerful occasions that create a sense of unity, shared values, and deep connections within our community and family.

2. How do you think festivals create a sense of unity and connection among people?

Ans

* Festivals hold a special place in my heart as they allow us to honor and preserve our cultural heritage. When we gather to observe the traditions and rituals passed down through our family and community, it’s a profound reminder of the depth of our cultural roots. This connection with our history gives us a sense of belonging and unity.

*Festivals are precious occasions for our family to come together. It’s a time when we set aside our busy lives and gather under one roof. These family reunions are invaluable as they enable us to reconnect with our loved ones, share stories and experiences, and strengthen our familial bonds.

*Festivals are not just about our family; they extend to our neighbors and the entire community. The act of celebrating together creates a strong sense of unity. Whether it’s through gift exchanges, communal feasts, or participating in local events, festivals promote friendly relations among neighbors, which is a key part of our community’s strength.

*Giving during festivals is a tradition that warms our hearts. Sharing food, gifts, or blessings with others is not just an act of generosity but a way of connecting on a deeper level. The sense of gratitude we feel when giving and receiving during festivals reinforces our interconnectedness.

*Festivals often feature communal celebrations like parades, cultural performances, and feasts. These shared festivities bring our community together, and it’s during these moments that we truly feel like a part of something larger. We come together to celebrate our shared cultural and religious identities, which further deepens our sense of unity.

* Festivals showcase the diversity within our community. We see this diversity as a source of strength and enrichment. When we appreciate the unique ways people celebrate, it not only promotes unity but also encourages learning from one another’s traditions. This acceptance of diversity brings us closer despite our differences.

From my point of view, festivals are a time of unity and connection. They allow us to cherish our cultural heritage, strengthen family bonds, build relationships within the community, practice acts of giving, celebrate together, and appreciate diversity. Festivals are not just events; they are the threads that weave the fabric of our unity and shared experiences.

  1. Can you share any personal experiences or memories of a festival that made you feel a strong bond with others?

Ans

January is a month of celebration because there is a New Year, Local Festival and Pongal. Pongal is a festival that fills me with a deep sense of connection and unity. Our village people come together to celebrate the bountiful harvest, and it’s a time when I feel especially close to my neighbors and friends.

In the morning, our family gathers to prepare the traditional Pongal dish. We work together, chopping ingredients, and tending to the pots, all the while sharing stories and laughter. The act of cooking this special meal is a bonding experience, reminding us of our shared agricultural heritage.

As the day progresses, we head to the temple where the main festivities are taking place. There’s an air of excitement and anticipation as we watch traditional music and dance performances. The beats of the drums and the colorful costumes create a vibrant atmosphere that resonates with our shared culture.

The highlight of the day is the communal Pongal cooking, where everyone contributes to a giant pot of Pongal. This cooperative effort embodies the essence of unity. We stand shoulder to shoulder, stirring the pot and sharing smiles, and when the Pongal is ready, we all partake in this delicious meal.

Pongal, to me, is not just a festival; it’s a celebration of our shared roots and the tight bonds we have in our community. The togetherness, the acts of cooperation, and the cultural performances all come together to create a strong sense of unity and connection that lingers long after the festival is over.

  1. In your opinion, why is it important for communities to come together and celebrate festivals?

Ans

Communities celebrating festivals is of great significance as it serves as a catalyst for unity, social cohesion, and cultural preservation. Festivals provide a platform for people to share their traditions and customs, fostering a sense of shared identity. These celebrations strengthen social bonds by bringing families, friends, and neighbors together, creating a strong sense of togetherness and reinforcing relationships.

Inclusivity is another crucial aspect, as festivals often welcome individuals from diverse backgrounds, promoting tolerance and understanding. The sense of belonging and connection to a larger community is a significant emotional benefit. Festivals also highlight shared values such as kindness and generosity, serving as reminders of the importance of these principles within the community.

Moreover, festivals can have economic and cultural impacts, benefiting local businesses and facilitating the exchange of ideas, art, and culinary delights. In times of adversity, communities that celebrate festivals together often exhibit higher resilience and a stronger sense of mutual support. These celebrations also encourage creativity and innovation, showcasing a community’s unique cultural expressions.

Lastly, festivals offer opportunities for individuals to learn about and appreciate the customs and traditions of others, thereby enhancing cultural understanding and fostering harmony among diverse groups. In essence, community celebrations of festivals enrich the cultural tapestry, strengthen social ties, and contribute to the overall vitality and unity of a community.

  1. Do you think festivals have the power to bridge cultural differences and promote understanding? Why or why not?

Ans

From my perspective, festivals indeed possess the remarkable power to bridge cultural differences and promote understanding. They do so by creating opportunities for cultural exchange, where diverse elements such as music, dance, art, and cuisine are shared and appreciated. Festivals are educational in nature, allowing us to learn about the customs and history of other cultures, thereby deepening our understanding and respect for our global neighbors.

Shared values at festivals, like peace and harmony, serve as a common ground for people from various backgrounds to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue and cooperation. The inclusivity of these events emphasizes that despite our differences, we can unite in celebration. Furthermore, festivals break down stereotypes and misconceptions by allowing us to interact with others in a positive and festive atmosphere. This interaction can lead to the dissolution of preconceived notions and help build more accurate perceptions of other cultures.

Personal relationships and friendships that form at festivals play a significant role in promoting cross-cultural understanding. The joy and camaraderie experienced during these events foster connections that extend beyond the festival itself.Participation in festivals from different cultures enhances our cultural sensitivity and respect, which influences how we interact in our daily lives. Festivals, in a broader sense, also act as tools for cultural diplomacy, enabling peaceful interactions and international understanding. While the success of using festivals as a means to bridge cultural gaps and promote understanding depends on various factors, including our openness and willingness to engage, these celebratory events undoubtedly hold great potential to bring diverse communities together and foster cross-cultural harmony.
