India to hold frozen lake marathon

The army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have been enlisted to implement a “appropriate action plan” for the event, a senior government official said on Sunday, which is scheduled to take place at Ladakh’s Pangong Tso on February 20.During the 2020 Indo-China conflict, the Indian opposition claimed that China had taken control of this area. With Indian soldiers stationed at the majority of the area’s sites of conflict, India has maintained its control over the region.

According to authorities, the marathon, which will take place at a height of 13,862 feet, will be the first of its kind to ever take place on Earth at this altitude, offering participants the chance to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the highest “frozen-lake marathon.”Beginning in Lukung, the 21-kilometer marathon will culminate in Maan village. Participating in the run are 75 chosen athletes from India and overseas. Wintertime temperatures at the roughly 700 square kilometre Pangong Lake reach below 30 degrees Celsius, freezing the saline water lake. The Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL), the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council-Leh, the Tourism Department, and the Leh district administration are working together to put it on. We anticipate that the frozen-lake marathon will help enhance tourism in other areas, notably in the Changthang region. “Tourists typically come Ladakh during the winter for the Chadar Trek (in Zanskar) and snow leopard sightings,” Suse said.
