Trailblazing Indian-Origin Ministers, Anita Anand and Kamal Khera, Join PM Carny’s Cabinet

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed two Indian-origin leaders, Anita Anand and Kamal Khera, to key ministerial roles in his newly formed cabinet.

Anita Anand, 58, continues as Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, while 36-year-old Kamal Khera has been named Minister of Health. Both were among the few ministers retained from former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.

Born in Delhi, Khera is one of the youngest women ever elected to Canada’s Parliament, first winning the Brampton West seat in 2015. A registered nurse, she previously worked in Toronto’s St. Joseph’s Health Centre and even returned to the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic. Expressing her commitment to public service, she posted on X: “As a nurse, my top priority is to always be there to support my patients, and that’s the same mentality I’ll bring every day to the role of Minister of Health.”

Anand, originally from Nova Scotia, was considered a strong contender for the prime ministerial role after Trudeau’s resignation. A legal academic and former law professor at the University of Toronto, she held the J.R. Kimber Chair in Investor Protection and Corporate Governance before entering politics.

Both leaders bring extensive experience to their roles as they take on key responsibilities in Carney’s government.
