The Massive Anti Corruption Protest in Kolkata

On Tuesday, September 13, when the BJP’s “protest rally against corruption” in West Bengal descended into violence, several police officers as well as party leaders and members were hurt. Images from the streets of Kolkata showed irate mobs attacking the police with lathes, stones, and bricks while also setting fire to their cars. Injured BJP leaders were also displayed. Members of the Saffron camp, including leaders Mina Devi Purohit and Swapan Dasgupta, reportedly suffered injuries at the rally held to denounce the allegedly dishonest actions of the Trinamool Congress administration.

There have been several injuries to police officers, but no serious injuries to protesters, according to a Kolkata Police officer. A mob can be seen attacking a police officer in a helmet on the streets of Kolkata in a video posted by political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla. The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday requested a report from the West Bengal Home Secretary regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) “Nabanna Abhijan” by September 19.

A confrontation between BJP members and police broke out inside the Bolpur railway station on Tuesday as police prevented members from departing for Kolkata to take part in the Nabanna Chalo march. The BJP had organised a large-scale protest march called “Nabanna Abhijan” to the state secretariat. Many employees were detained. Seven trains, three from north Bengal and four from the south, had been organised by the BJP for supporters to participate in the “Nabanna Abhijan.”

According to party sources, the police also stopped buses in North 24 Parganas carrying BJP workers to Kolkata. The High Court further instructed the Police to prevent any wrongful detentions and to make sure that no public property was harmed.
